We'd both happily come back. I'm vegan and my partner isn't, and we each enjoyed a main and dessert. The pea and mint tortellini was tasty and a welcome change from the uninspired vegan pub options I'm used to. The dessert was great too. I'd love to see more plant-based choices so I can try something new next time. The teddy bear latte art and ice cream for our dog were a lovely extra. This is about the restaurant only: we were welcomed with our dog in the dog-friendly dining area.

We were so glad we came out to try this restaurant before bringing friends. We both enjoy cooking at home and don't often leave a meal this pleased, but the whole evening was a success. The restaurant felt contemporary and welcoming, and our booked table was in a lovely spot. The menu had plenty of variety, including fish and vegetarian choices, and we found something we wanted in all three courses: starter, main and dessert. Everyone who served us was engaged and seemed genuinely happy to be there. The service was well beyond what we're used to. We eat out often, so we don't give a 10 out of 10 lightly. We'd both give this evening that score, and we'd certainly return, especially with friends. Wholeheartedly recommended, maybe the jewel in the crown :)

The food was great, and everyone on staff was friendly and helpful. It's a decent hotel in a handy spot near the town centre. The room, though, brought the stay down quite a bit. Its dark decor may suit the age and character of the building, but the lighting was nowhere near enough. In the evening I could barely read on the sofa, and even the mirror lights and lamp at the dressing table were so dim that I used my phone torch. It seems like a fairly easy, inexpensive fix, and brighter lighting would make a real difference.

The rooms were clean and comfortable, though the decor looked a little tired in places. A couple of minor room issues came up for guests who stayed over, but they were dealt with promptly. And the breakfast deserves a mention: I was told it would be good, and it really was. My son and daughter-in-law held their wedding reception at the Crown and Thistle last Friday, and it was perfect. The food was delicious, especially the evening pizzas, which were a big hit. The friendly, helpful staff all helped make it a day to remember. Emma did a fantastic job organising everything and keeping the day running smoothly, so the family could relax and enjoy it.

The pub restaurant food was great, with a good choice of drinks and a rotating ale or two. Staff were friendly and helpful too. It's an eclectic hotel in a handy spot close to the town centre. I liked the room's dark decor, which suited the character of the building. Some might find the lighting inadequate, but after a full summer walkabout it worked for me.
