Douneside House

We’ve just returned and had the tasting menu with a wine flight on the first night, then dinner from the Festive menu the next evening. Both meals were delicious. The hotel is gorgeous, the food is exceptional, and there’s a pool on site in an amazing location. We’re about to make our second visit. We don’t live nearby, so it’s been a while, but coming back was always the plan and I’m so happy we’re going. This time we’re staying in an apartment; last time we were in the main building.

The gardens were stunning, and we really enjoyed the pool, steam room and hot tub at the health club. The staff were warm and welcoming, and our cottage was clean, comfortable and cosy. Breakfast was delicious, with plenty of continental choices as well as cooked dishes. Douneside House was one of our favourite stays in Scotland. Such lovely hospitality, thank you!

Afternoon tea was lovely from start to finish. We had delicious sausage rolls, sandwiches, scones and cakes, with our choice of tea or coffee. The staff at Douneside House welcomed us warmly and were professional, experienced and polite. The setting was beautiful, with immaculate grounds and outstanding views. Thank you again to everyone there.

The food alone makes Downside worth a stay, with choices to suit different tastes and dietary needs. The cellar and tasting menu make it a special experience. I also loved the kitchen garden produce on the menu and the grounds, which feel like a hidden gem. There’s plenty of parking, and lots of space for a quiet read or a walk with views across farmland, nearby hills and the cliffs of Lochnagar. Easy hikes from the grounds lead to local villages and historic remains.
