Torridon Estate

The mansion's grand presence and period details were even more impressive in person than in photos. The rates seemed to account for the known drawbacks, so they felt reasonable, and I didn't come away feeling disappointed or overcharged. We were left wanting more from breakfast and the dining options. With only one restaurant nearby, at a five-star property, and everything else an hour's drive away, it would've helped to be told in advance or given the chance to book dinner ahead. The estate could also use dedicated B&B staff and a few repairs, especially to the bath's hot water controls and the room's poorly functioning drinking water dispenser. Despite those issues, I'd still give it a high four.

We were pleasantly surprised by this place during our NC500 trip, since we hadn't expected a hotel. The rooms were spacious and comfortable, and breakfast was excellent. The road in is interesting, but most cars should manage it easily with a bit of patience. I'd definitely recommend it as part of an NC500 holiday.

I'd never stay here again. There was a band playing, and the next morning a bunch of guests were sitting at the tables downstairs, but no one had managed to eat. One guy was so angry he went looking for the homeowner. Breakfast took too long, and there are no nearby places to eat, so expect a 20-minute drive just to get a bite. The room was dirty, with all sorts of dirt marks on the chair. The shower would go from hot to cold, and I'm sure something was wrong with the pump. Traveler beware.

This was a unique stay in a beautiful place, cosy, quirky and relaxed. Think of it as spending a night or two in a mansion with the family who lives there, rather than at a typical professionally run accommodation. Everything won't work perfectly and the service won't be impeccable. The charm is in that homely imperfection.
