Alston turned out to be a lovely, very likeable little town, and I spent my rest day here during the Pennine Way hike. After the rather tough 20-mile hike from Dufton via Cross Fell, I couldn’t have picked a better place to recover and unwind. The Victoria Inn is a classic Main Street pub with rooms upstairs. When I visited, the new owners and managers, Kamila and Paul from London, had been in charge for 6 months, I believe. I was very happy here. My room was simple, clean, cosy and comfortable, and the pub felt sociable and welcoming with great stuff on tap. I had the chili burger on my first evening, and it was fantastic. I haven’t had such a great burger in a long time. Best of all was the warm welcome. Kamila and Paul are true professionals who do an excellent job, and they’re great and interesting company, too. I really enjoyed my stay, wish I could have stayed longer and can warmly recommend the place. Hope I’ll be back someday!
