The evening meals were a highlight: fresh, homemade, and really tasty. We also liked seeing locals enjoying a beer in the walkers bar. Francesca and her team took great care of us, and the room was quiet and spacious, with everything we’d requested, a bath for soaking after walks, and a spectacular valley view. We’d love to come back.

Waking up to the crags in the sunshine was pretty special, and the location makes this a great base for exploring the Lakes. The bar had a lovely atmosphere, with walkers passing through, and the food was excellent and reasonably priced. They’re very dog friendly, too. The hotel has recently left corporate ownership and is now run by a local family. They were helpful when they found my booking had been made under the previous management, and sorted it without any fuss. New Dungeon Ghyll is charming, unpretentious and welcoming. I’ll definitely return.

We spent Christmas 2025 here, and the staff were helpful with anything we needed. The Christmas lunch was fantastic, and taking our dog along was no problem. The hotel is a bit dated and could use some refurbishment, but we have no complaints given the location and the people working there. The area is fantastic, with a great walk up to stickle tarn right beside the hotel.

You can head straight out on walks from the hotel, so we parked the car and left it there for our two midweek nights with friends. The room was spacious, with a great shower and spectacular views. The toiletries, bedding and towels were better quality than usual, and breakfast was especially good. All the food was superb and well priced. It’s refreshing to see a young local couple running the place, employing local people and using local produce. They really care. Refurbishment of some public areas is already underway, and I’m looking forward to seeing what they’ve done when we go back. It really is a gem.

The Steak and Ale pie was one of the best I’ve had, and I try it wherever I go. After hiking over from Wasdale on Sunday the 22nd, it was great to freshen up in our clean, amazing room with its powerful shower before dinner. Everyone was friendly and helpful, from the smiles when we arrived to the welcome throughout our one night stay. The relaxed atmosphere and incredible views make us keen to return.
