The only downside was letting people choose their own breakfast after drinking. Kippers seemed like a great idea after pint number five, but not so much the next morning! I’m sure they’d have let me swap if I’d asked. Luckily, the dog enjoyed the kippers, and my scrambled eggs on toast were perfect. We had a lovely night with fantastic food, a brilliant range of local cask beer and live folk music. My husband especially enjoyed his goat curry, poor goat! Can’t wait to return.

The pub has loads of character, with an open fire and lots of people bringing their dogs. We stayed two nights last weekend on a climbing trip. The staff were friendly and helpful, and both the cooked breakfasts and the fish and chips at dinner were excellent.

After a long day on the hills, this cosy walkers pub beside the hotel is a legendary warm haven for hikers and dogs. It’s open to everyone and only a short walk back to the NT campsite. Good beers, hearty grub and decent WiFi. Keep it up, guys.

For stage 3 of The Cumbria Way, my friend and I planned to arrive from Ambleside at 0801 hours. I emailed during the week, and Linda said they could fit us in if we booked and paid in advance, so I did. When we arrived, the waitress welcomed us and brought coffee and breakfast. Great food, great value and great service. Thanks to the chef and staff. We appreciated it, and it set us up for the walk ahead.
