Thorneyfield Guest House

The cooked breakfast was very good, and the beds were clean, fresh and comfortable. Thorneyfield guest house is right in the centre of Ambleside and was clean throughout. The staff were naturally friendly and so welcoming. They gave us advice on places to see and routes to take, and seemed happy to help with anything. I’d be completely happy to stay there again.

Andrew and Carole were a great source of information for the places we wanted to explore. The guest house is central, with lots to see in Ambleside, and we found the easy access to bus travel useful. It also made an excellent base for exploring much of the beautiful Lake District. Our hosts gave us a warm welcome, and we enjoyed the comfortable rooms and excellent breakfasts. The guest house had been made safe in line with the Covid 19 regulations.

Carol and Andy were lovely, friendly, helpful and efficient, and the hospitality deserves five stars. I loved their breakfasts and the little extras in the room, like hot chocolate, tea sachets and biscuits. The place is conveniently located in the central Lakes district, with easy access to walks and the pubs and restaurants in Ambleside. I’d definitely stay again. The accommodation gets four stars from me: the rooms were clean, basic and a good size, and the WiFi signal was strong. I felt a bit funny about having my bathroom down the stairs, though the host offered a robe. Parking was tricky too, with one hour on-street parking using a permit, then permit parking in a car park five minutes away.

The house has a cosy feel and is well presented and clean. The breakfasts were stunning, and the service polite and friendly. We booked rooms 6 and 2, and our requests for an extra blanket and some spoons were sorted without any fuss. The location is handy for shops, restaurants and nearby tourist spots. The place changed owners about six weeks ago, but you wouldn’t know it. My only issues were the beds, which felt a bit too firm for me, and the pillows, which were a strange type, sort of filled with beads rather than foam. That could just be personal preference. Room 6’s private bathroom is down some stairs, which I suppose is an unavoidable quirk of the house layout, but it’s still inconvenient. It was a very positive stay overall. Softer beds and comfier pillows would have made it pretty much perfect.
