We've stayed at Billy Croft Cottage several times and love it every time. It's a cosy place, especially with the log burner going, and the pub is five minutes down the road. It's great for walks with dogs. This is an old converted barn that allows dogs, so I can't see how it could be completely dust-free, but it's always been clean when we've visited. Wendy, the owner, has only ever been helpful. She leaves a lovely welcome pack, then lets us get on with things, and she's across the road if we need anything. I'm really not sure why Ann Hoyle called it filthy.

The cleanliness was practically nonexistent. Thick dog hair covered the stair carpet, and we had to vacuum and clean everything before using it. There was open food left in the cupboards and freezer, and the owner was unhelpful and denied the place was dirty. We managed three of our seven booked days, only because the beds were clean. Industrial cleaning machines need to be brought in before anyone else stays. What a shambles.

The cottage was more spacious than I expected and very comfortable. It's in a lovely village on the Pennine Way, with a good pub and café nearby. There are excellent walks in every direction for both new and experienced walkers.

A tidy, clean place and a great base for exploring, with a well-equipped kitchen. The oven was awkward to use, as they often are in holiday homes. I'd book again without hesitation.
