We stopped in after a group walk, planning to have a drink while we waited for the others and then order food. After using the toilets, we were asked whether we were eating or drinking. When I asked for a lemonade, the landlord just stared at me and asked if that was all. He was rude to other people in our group too. I’ve never walked out of a pub before, but we left without spending anything.

The tapas was great, but the atmosphere was awkward and the owners were rude. My partner arrived at 5:45pm because Google said they opened at 11am. He was shouted away and left outside, then when he tried again at 6:10pm, they argued with him about the opening times. While we were there, I also heard the landlord tell a local, 'I don't know why I do this job, I hate people,' followed by plenty of other complaints and groans about customers. If you like a cold atmosphere, this probably isn’t for you.

They can run the business however they like, but we expected basic kindness and decent behaviour. The barmen didn’t come across as kind. It felt like they were focused on making sales and taking money, while pushing customers away.

The landlord knows his wines and has some really well-priced gems on the list. I also love that the Dering Arms is one of the few local pubs with non-mainstream drinks. The Lowenbrau is especially delicious and served perfectly cold. It’s always a joy to pop in for lunch or a quick drink. There are no dogs or children under 12 inside, though there’s plenty of outdoor space when the weather’s good.

We found the prices very reasonable for the quality of the food and service, and we’re looking forward to booking again. The food was very good, especially if you enjoy fish. I had smoked mackerel in cheese to start, then sea bass in an incredibly rich fish sauce. My wife had sardines with rosemary butter, followed by confit duck with bubble and squeak, and a lemon posset for dessert. The pub has a lovely feel, with tasteful lighting and decor, and no tacky fruit machines or music. It seems better suited to a proper meal than passing trade.
