The Chequers Inn

We hadn’t tried the Chequers before, though my friends mentioned it has changed hands in recent years. Everyone was lovely and the service was really good. My friends had the Sunday roast and enjoyed it, especially the chef’s varied selection of vegetables. I went for the Japanese beef curry rice bowl and really enjoyed its fresh, full flavour. If you’re nearby, drop in. Places like this deserve support.

We’ve driven past plenty of times but hadn’t gone in until we stopped for a pint to have a look. It’s very nice inside, with more room than you’d guess from outside. We only popped in for a drink, so I can’t say anything about the food. The car park is a little small, so it may be worth checking how busy it gets before visiting. We’ll be back.

The starters looked beautiful, and the vegetables with our Sunday lunch were lovely. The Yorkshire pudding was huge too. I had the roast beef and my boyfriend had the pork, though they’d run out of chicken. We both felt ill the next morning, and I think the beef was underdone, it was completely pink. I’ve eaten beef like that before without a problem, but no one asked how I wanted it cooked, and the menu didn’t say it would arrive almost raw. I’ve contacted the pub to let them know, but sadly I don’t want to return.

Dinner in the rear dining room was excellent, and breakfast was the best I’ve had in years. The staff and locals were very friendly and happy to chat. Our room, number 3, was spacious and comfortable, with a roomy shower and a huge copper bath we didn’t get time to try. It had lots of character, with wooden beams and a wavy ceiling. Since it’s right above the bar, expect some noise until the lively bar closes at 11pm. The other rooms should be quieter. The cosy bar was busy during our visit, mainly because of a charity quiz, which made for a great evening. We didn’t get to the refreshed garden, but it looked inviting from a distance. Smarden is a lovely village and worth a short walk around. It’s a fantastic pub with good food, decent beer and a local wine or two.
