The potatoes were genuinely raw, and the vegetables were undercooked too. My £18 seabass portion was tiny and covered in butter that I hadn’t asked for and that wasn’t mentioned. My partner had the beef. I tried to tell the waitress, but she ignored me at first. When she finally came back, my partner had finished eating, which made an already awkward situation more frustrating. They offered a free drink or dessert, but that didn’t make up for the poorly portioned, undercooked food at that price. We visited The Punchbowl in Askam last Sunday, and it was a really disappointing meal. The service was slow and dismissive, and the food was overpriced for its quality. We won’t be back.

We booked quite last minute for Sunday dinner and they still fitted us in. The portions were huge, and everything came out piping hot and absolutely delicious. Best pub or restaurant meals we’ve had in ages. The chef and staff were excellent. Can’t recommend it enough.

The fire was a blissful place to warm up after our cold, windy walk. Even though we arrived close to the end of food service, they found a table for all four of us and made us feel welcome. We all enjoyed our starters, and the mains were above average. Plenty of parking too. I’d recommend the restaurant. The toilet lights kept flickering and need fixing, as that might be a problem for someone sensitive to them.

I needed somewhere to stay overnight on my way to Edinburgh, and finding Punchbowl was a fabulous surprise. I was running late after a nightmare on the Birmingham end of the M6, but the staff were amazing, helpful and very accommodating. Dinner was amazing, and everything coming out of the kitchen looked so good. I loved everything about the place. I’d definitely like to come back next year with more time to explore this beautiful area.

I’m back for a few nights, after only a brief visit a couple of years ago. It’s in a beautiful village near the Lowther river and estate, and the pub serves excellent food and drinks. My room was very nice. There was a small issue with the hot water and heating, but they sorted it quickly. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the service was great. I’ll definitely be back.
