Best Western Webbington Hotel & Spa

Every room seemed to have a very sensitive fire or smoke alarm. We were in a separate block from the main hotel, so each morning we had to cross a cold, shady courtyard to get breakfast. Also, although the hotel appears on the Best Western booking site, it’s only sponsored by them.

The drive up to the hotel is on a narrow road, so take care on the way in. Once there, it’s a very comfortable place to relax and get away from routine. The hotel is beautiful and spacious, with plenty of history that makes it feel like travelling back in time. The price seemed reasonable for what was on offer, the staff were helpful and friendly, and the gym, spa and swimming pool were all in excellent condition. We had a very good experience.

After a blustery walk up Crooks Peak, we stopped for drinks and bar snacks to warm up, and the food was excellent. There’s a footpath straight from the car park. The bar felt cosy, and the terrace looks like a lovely place to sit when it’s sunny, with fantastic views. We checked by email in advance that our little walking group could come, and they couldn’t have been more helpful. We’ll definitely be back as the weather improves.

The staff were the best part of our stay, while the room we had was the worst. We came for Valentine’s Day, and things seemed great until I tried to shower. The water pressure in our room wasn’t enough, so I left it until after dinner. It was really cold in the room, so we turned up the heating and went to eat. The restaurant had a small romantic table with rose petals, and a lovely woman lit a tea candle for us. They’d prepared a special Valentine’s menu, and the food was great, though I’m no food expert. I highly recommend the restaurant, especially the salmon with oyster sauce and the tiramisu, which were heavenly. When we got back, the room still wasn’t much warmer, but at least the water pressure had improved and I could finally shower. Later, the heating stopped around midnight, and the room got cold again. Neither of us could sleep, even my partner, who isn’t usually picky. The bed and pillows were among the most uncomfortable I’ve had, made worse by the cold. By 5am I’d had enough and got dressed, with the heating still off. At 7am, the kindest lady served me a lovely double espresso. The hotel, restaurant and our room were spotless, all the staff were amazing, and I really hope management recognises that. The food was very tasty, the cook must be an angel, and the natural surroundings and views were beautiful. It’s an absolute shame that whoever is responsible for the heating and room comfort let it be like this. We’d happily return if we could sleep and not need paracetamol afterwards. I’m sorry that we spent our first night alone for a while, after a few years.
