This used to be a nice B&B, but it’s gone downhill. The place was dirty, the sink plug wouldn’t come out, and there were holes in the wall. The plugs around the place didn’t look safe either. It needs a proper clean and an overhaul. I wouldn’t stay here again.

The shared bathroom has never caused me a problem, even though it could use an update. It’s spacious and works fine. The rooms have most of what I need, and the place is good for freshening up and resting before the next leg of a trip. I’ve used it several times as a stop on the way home from motorcycle rallies, so I know what to expect. It’s comfortable for my needs and very reasonably priced. It’s not the Ritz, but it doesn’t cost Ritz prices, and I think it offers terrific value despite the criticisms I’ve heard. The full breakfast is outstanding for the price. The two women in the kitchen are both lovely and personable, and I got on well with them. I’m already looking forward to staying again.

I booked a room for work through Priceline for 14-16 May, a week ahead, and received an email confirming the reservation. But when I arrived on the evening of the 14th, the guesthouse owner told me there wasn’t a room for me. I tried to reach Priceline from the UK, but its system only gave me the Chicago office number and some numbers that didn’t work.

I arrived around 7:45pm and there was nobody there. It took over 15 minutes for anyone to show up, then they took a while to get me a room key. They asked me to pay in cash. I couldn’t check my reservation just then and wasn’t sure if I’d paid, so I said I’d sort it out in the morning. When I checked later, I saw I’d already paid. The key wouldn’t open the room. It took another 10 minutes to get someone’s attention, and the replacement key they eventually brought didn’t work either. With no spare rooms, they put me in a cleaning room with a folding single bed. It wasn’t comfortable, but I had no real choice, and I slept badly. There was no towel, I had no idea how long the bedding had been on the bed, and the room, bathroom, and toilet were in poor, quite dirty condition. There wasn’t even any toilet paper. Avoid this place.

We booked through hotel.com without any trouble, but checking in was a different story. We rang the bell twice with no answer, then heard a woman’s voice in the distance. I walked down the corridor and found a very intoxicated woman. When I said we were there to check in, she told us our room wasn’t cleaned and wouldn’t be ready that day. She thought for a moment, took us through her own house to a small space with just a single bed, said it was all she had, and left. I went looking for her and found her in bed. Hotel .com were very helpful and found us somewhere else to stay. I called the police because I was concerned for her safety. She had bruising on her face and seemed too intoxicated to be in charge of a guest house. The police spoke to her and contacted her husband to come take charge of the building. We left after speaking to two guests and explaining my concerns. They spoke to the police and said I was the drunk person. The police breathalysed me and got a zero reading. I have photos and the police incident number to back this up. Please avoid this place.
