The George at Backwell

Every course was delicious at The George last night. We treated ourselves to a Tomahawk sharer steak, cooked to perfection, and the burrata salad was the best I’ve had anywhere. It’s a warm, welcoming pub with a great atmosphere, friendly and attentive service, and we could bring the dog too, which was a bonus. A brilliant local pub. We’ll be back!

The service was fantastic, but the Sunday lunch food was poor. The potatoes weren’t crispy and there was very little veg, though the Yorkshire pudding was great. No spoons were provided with the condiments, which really annoys me. They also added a service charge to the bill, something I’m not a fan of. Food 2/5, service 5/5.

The food was good and hot, and the service was OK, though we were the first in and got forgotten a little because no servers were coming by. They were very busy. We’d booked the restaurant for our Valentine’s Day meal, but were told our table would be in the garden room because they were so busy. That would have been fine, except the tables were very close together, which wasn’t great for couples wanting an intimate meal. We could see other couples feeling awkward. Luckily, nobody was next to our table, but I felt bad for them. The atmosphere felt a bit flat, and some music would’ve helped. The squeaky kitchen door was distracting too.

We stayed nearby for airport access and only ate at the pub. There were lots of fresh options, and the food was really tasty. Great service, and I’d definitely recommend it. I’m tempted to stay in the rooms next time.
