I’ve stayed at Redwings several times while travelling around England, and the convenience used to be a plus. Now I’m looking at other options. The rooms feel dated and need refurbishment, and the cleaning hasn’t been consistent during my visits. Everyone in our party heard a constant high pitched noise, but we never worked out where it came from. My daughter ended up with many red, inflamed, uncomfortable bug bites, and we could see bugs on the beds and in the room. The window wouldn’t shut fully despite several tries, so we kept hearing traffic from the A1. There was also talking, laughing and banging late into the night, around 1am. In the mornings, dogs barked relentlessly and made it hard to get a restful start. The hallways often smelled strongly of cannabis and cigarettes. It wasn’t a good experience.

A quiet, tucked away spot outside town that’s still easy to reach. The receptionist was absolutely lovely and very accommodating. I’d recommend it for the customer service alone. I was really happy with it.

The room was clean and spacious, and I was glad to find both a bathtub and a shower. The staff were friendly from the start: I called ahead with a few questions and got helpful, accommodating answers, and the woman who checked me in was welcoming too. Coming from the south, getting there was easy, though the turn into the hotel is sharp, so take care. The car park was crowded when I arrived and could use a little repair. I think the restaurant sharing it is quite popular. The rooms are dated, but the prices are very reasonable, so set expectations accordingly. There were hangers and shelves for clothes, but no drawers or cupboards. All the sockets in my room were on one side, opposite the bed, which left my CPAP power lead as a trip hazard overnight and meant I had to leave my phone across the room to charge. To be continued...

For £40 a night, it was great. The room was clean and spacious, with a TV and kettle, though there was no fridge.

The road noise and barking dogs made it quite noisy, and the rooms and facilities are worn and tired. If you don’t mind where you sleep, this low star place may suit you. I just hope I haven’t picked up bed bugs.
