I really didn’t want to leave. In the two years I’ve been staying in different places, Old Bank has probably been the best for kindness and dignity. Claire genuinely cares about people, which is rare in temporary accommodation and hostels. Laura is lovely too, and the staff do more than you’d expect.

The best part for me was how much was included for a reasonable price. There’s a vending machine downstairs for a late-night drink, several TV channels, NETFLIX and free WiFi. Once you enter with your code, everything’s straightforward. I got a triple room for extra space, with a wide street-facing window where I could see my car. I parked straight across the street, where parking was free and it wasn’t a bus lane. I didn’t see a lift, so lots of luggage probably means taking the stairs. The Old Bank was basic but really clean, including the bathroom, towels and sheets. The shower pressure and hot water were great, though you have to figure out how to adjust the nozzles for the right temperature. It’s a few minutes from Crumlin Jail, about a 20-minute walk to the city centre, or five minutes by taxi, and the bus stop is right outside. I visit Belfast every year and hadn’t known about this place before. I’d stay again for the very reasonable price. The cleaners we saw outside our room were all friendly, smiling and greeted us warmly. It was nice to see them first thing when we opened the door with our hangover heads. My one complaint is checkout at 11 am. Noon would have been better. I’d read the old reviews but decided to judge for myself, and I’m glad I did.

The staff were really nice, and both the room and bathroom were good, though the room was a bit small. I’d stay again. The signs could be better, though. I wandered around looking for the kitchen where the ironing board was and couldn’t find it.

After doing my Christmas shopping, I’d booked a room for two for Saturday and expected to get straight into bed. Instead, it turned out to be a serviced apartment, and whoever took my booking never booked it as she said she would. There was no way in without a code and nobody there to open the door. Then I was told I wasn’t booked in at all. We had to drive back to Dublin. I can’t say anything nice about it.

The staff were kind and caring, and for the price it was good value. It’s fairly close to the city centre, with good public transport. My room was small but clean and quiet, with a good TV and a comfortable bed.
