The open deck was a lovely spot to watch the sun go down and chat with Paul and Wendy and the other guests. They made such a friendly atmosphere that everyone got talking, and there are several pubs and places to eat nearby. It’s a great place to unwind. Just remember you’re staying in a small converted gunship: the rooms are cabin-like, the floors uneven, the doors are porthole-style, and you have to duck below decks most of the time. That quirkiness was part of the charm. Paul and Wendy are lovely hosts.

The enormous lounge has lovely views and all the comforts of home, so you can happily stay in all day if the weather turns bad. Not many B&Bs offer that. The sleeping accommodation is comfortable, though quirky, and Paul and Wendy were great hosts, even though they’re Brummies and I’m a Yorkshireman. They’ve done wonders with a 1941 timber-built motor gun boat, but you do have to remember what it is. It isn’t five star, just really good. This definitely wasn’t a one-off visit for us. We’ll be back, so give it a try.
