This is the first time I've been disappointed with a Premier Inn, which is a shame since I regularly sing their praises. The young woman at check-in was outstanding, and this isn't aimed at the check-in staff. The bathroom had a strong smell of urine that stayed throughout my overnight visit. I'm not convinced it had been cleaned, beyond fresh towels being put out. The room itself was okay, but the bedclothes weren't what I normally expect, so I wondered if the bed had been fully changed. I hope it had been. The Wi-Fi didn't work. That alone wouldn't have mattered, but there was no mobile signal in the room either. The restaurant was closed, which I hadn't planned to use, but it made the reception area feel really run-down. The hotel served its purpose, but I wouldn't stay again.

The room (316) was excellent and faced the quiet car park side, but the service was abysmal. I booked a two-night Meal Deal and was told at Reception on Wednesday 4/3/26 that staff shortages meant no dinner that night. I had to go to a local Chinese, which wasn't great. At breakfast on Thursday I was told there would be no food that evening either. I walked across town to Deep Blue on Lairgate for fish and chips, and only found out when I got back to the PI that evening meals were being served after all. Nobody at Reception bothered to let me know. I was furious. This is the worst service I've ever had at Premier Inn, where I stay often. Frankly, PI should refund my stay for this very poor service.

The Minster and shopping center next door make this a handy spot, and the railway station is walkable too. The old town center takes a bit longer to reach, but you can still walk there. There's a Greggs nearby for a breakfast butty and a decent enough pub serving food just across the road. The rooms are clean and comfortable, though the place was built a few years ago and could use some TLC. There's no bar, just a few fridges stocked with bottled beer and wine.

The staff were friendly and helpful, as I've often found Premier Inn staff to be, and the team here seemed especially cheerful. They found me an iron and board, then a phone charger after I'd left mine at home. The room was easy to find, and the multi-storey car park is right next door. You do have to pay, but the website makes that clear, so it wasn't a surprise. There were a couple of problems. My first room had a strong damp-dog smell. I don't mind dogs being allowed, and I'm sure it was a service dog, but not being able to open the windows meant I couldn't air the room out. The staff apologized and quickly moved me to a great room. Then my prepaid evening meal was unavailable because the chef hadn't come to work. That wasn't the fault of the staff on duty. They were very apologetic, assured me it would be refunded, and suggested nearby places. I tried Beverley Hills Diner, just a couple of minutes' walk away, and it was lovely. A nice stay, and it came close to five stars.

The room was lovely, and both the evening meal and breakfast were great. A young woman helped us with the screen check-in and did it for us. All the staff were out of this world, nothing seemed like too much trouble. We had a good laugh and a natter about holidays. Thanks to everyone. We stayed one night, 22nd August.
