I found the stay a bit spooky. I never saw anyone there, although I heard footsteps on the creaking stairs and expected to run into someone at breakfast, maybe even the hosts. The place was clean but very dated, and the hallway smelled musty when I arrived. My tiny room, room 3, had a bright emergency light on all night. Breakfast was only cereal, fruit juice and yoghurt, with no bread for toast, which was disappointing. It was somewhere to sleep, but I’d rather stay at a Premier Inn or Travelodge.

I’ve stayed in newer hotels, but in the end a room is somewhere to rest and sleep. Mine at the Madeira was clean, tidy, warm and comfortable, and breakfast was satisfactory. I was happy with my stay.

I was travelling alone while my other half was at the ROH, so I felt a little uneasy when I arrived, though I needn’t have worried. The room was quiet and clean, parking was easy, and the ensuite had been recently updated. Some corridors are a bit tired, but I was very happy with the room and thought it was excellent value.

A very basic hotel, but clean and safe, and everything works. There’s little comfort or in the way of extras. Reception isn’t staffed, and breakfast is minimal.

It was a good night in a lovely, quiet hotel, and I’d stay again and recommend it. Our room was a good size, clean and tidy. Breakfast was okay, though a little more variety would have made it better. I’m picky about this, but I’d also have liked more tea and coffee options. The woman at reception on the morning of 28 Jan 18 was chatty, very nice and polite.
