When I got in touch to dispute the damage claim, Sykes Cottages later emailed an invoice for £150 for cleaning, which they said had taken three days and included the shower screen. They’d tried to charge my account, but couldn’t because I cancelled my card as soon as their first letter arrived. The owner has since decided not to take the matter any further. We left the cottage as we found it, so it was a shock to get home and hear that Sykes Cottages alleged fake tan had stained the shower tiles. The “before” photo showed a different part of the shower, alongside a greatly enlarged image of tiles said to be stained. I’m 75 and disabled, and can just about stand in the shower. My husband is 78. Neither of us has ever used fake tan. It’s a lovely cottage, but be careful if you book it. Take photos when you arrive and leave, check the property, and report any problems straight away. I wish I’d done that.

The village pub is only about 30 seconds up the road, with friendly staff and amazing food, and there’s a cafe and shop in the village too. The cottage itself is clean and cosy, with a comfortable master bedroom bed and a well equipped kitchen. We liked relaxing in the comfy lounge by the log burner, though you might want to bring extra logs. The shower was great and there was plenty of hot water. Parking works for one car, but getting parked isn’t the easiest. We stayed three nights and would happily come back.
