Derby Manor

Our stay was short, but really lovely. The room was quiet and cosy, with lots of character, and the whole place was clean and clearly well cared for. Staff were so friendly and helpful. They showed us to the room and went through the facilities at check-in, which was a nice touch. Breakfast was delicious too. We’ll definitely come back.

The breakfast was the biggest letdown for me. I love a hotel or B&B breakfast, and usually stay at Premier Inn, where I’m always happy with it. I’d read reviews calling this buffet wonderful, but the choice was limited: nice croissants, sliced bread for toast, cereal, one plain yogurt, and some rather tired-looking dried fruit. There wasn’t any fresh or tinned fruit. The scrambled egg was honestly awful. I had porridge the next morning instead, and that was actually very nice. The coffee pot wasn’t working, so it was instant Nescafe sachets, which was disappointing when you like a proper coffee to start the day. There was plenty I did like. The decor is lovely, it feels warm and cosy, the rooms are spacious, and the staff were friendly and helpful. You can also help yourself to free tea, coffee and biscuits in the lounge in the afternoon. We knew it was a fair walk from the main town and didn’t mind, but anyone who doesn’t want to walk will need a car, bus or taxi to get into Bournemouth. We paid half price on a Black Friday offer, and at that price it was quite nice. I think full price would have left me disappointed, especially with reviews setting such high expectations. It’s a nice place to stay, but reviews need a little reality too. One concern: we came back to find our room unlocked and not properly closed. Nothing was taken and it wasn’t a major issue, but the old doors need extra care to shut properly, and cleaners should know that. We told reception, and they were very apologetic, but I’d be careful about leaving valuables. I tried emailing my feedback instead of posting a review, but the address in their review request bounced back as rejected.

The staff made us feel welcome straight away, and we even got an upgrade on arrival. Our room was immaculate and spacious, with lovely decor, a fabulous bed and wonderfully fluffy bath sheets instead of small towels. The bathroom was amazing, especially the spa bath. It’s a beautiful, well-kept hotel, conveniently placed for the seafront. I’d definitely return.

The TV’s screen mirroring was glitchy at times, so an upgrade that supports casting or streaming would be a nice improvement. Otherwise, I was really glad we chose this manor for our three-night stay. It’s impeccably maintained, with gorgeous decorations and furnishings. Our spacious, comfortable room had a large bed and two handy luggage racks, and the shower was a highlight, with great pressure and plenty of hot water. Breakfast was lovely, and Ana was warm and attentive. Staff were approachable and helpful whenever we needed anything.
