We had to cancel our Christmas booking in September after my grandmother passed away. She’d been looking forward to the holiday. The hotel kept our deposit and couldn’t let us use it toward a smaller set of rooms instead. I could understand the decision better if it had been communicated with some kindness, but the response was quite terse given the circumstances. I’ve added a star because we enjoyed staying there in previous years.

The breakfast, restaurant, spa and pool are in the main building, and all were to a great standard. I’ve written more about those in my review of the Connaught Hotel main building. The lodge is conveniently located in Bournemouth, and I’d recommend it for the location, spa and value for money. We stayed two nights. The room was spacious and had the basics, including air conditioning, but it looked older than the Hotels.com listing suggested. There were marks on the walls that needed painting, a cobweb in a corner and dated furniture. It could use a refresh. One accessibility point: we were on the top floor, and the building had just one very small lift, barely big enough for one person and a suitcase.

The bed was really comfortable, and the assistant manager did a great job. He was constantly working and looking after the guests.

This lodge feels well past its best. It does bring to mind the Torque Hotel from back in the day, only without Basil.
