Sutherland House Guest House

The room wasn't soundproof. I could hear someone in another room coughing at night, though that's to be expected in a Victorian building. Given the reasonable price and convenient location, I can forgive a little shabbiness with age. Sutherland House has the things I care about: a good spot, friendly service, and a bedroom and bathroom kept meticulously clean. Our small rear room, number 7, looked onto a hillside of Victorian seafront houses. The walls were a bit sad, but the room and bathroom were spotless, the sleek bathroom seemed recently renovated, and the shower pressure was great. The towels were brilliantly white, the bed linen equally good, and the cleaners stripped and remade the bed the day after we arrived. They also noticed our wine and thoughtfully left a couple of glasses. Robert greeted us warmly and recommended booking dinner, explaining that ferry traffic keeps Oban busy all year, not just on weekends. The sign on the marquee may be broken, and the stair carpet a little frayed, but the colourful Hairy Coo portraits by Steven Brown are a cheerful distraction. The hotel is at the end of the esplanade, by the town parking lots, with a quick walk to restaurants and a pub next door.

We really enjoyed our two-night weekend stay. The rooms were spacious, tidy and had all we needed, and the outdoor area was a lovely spot to watch the sunset. Robert was warm and helpful, let us check in later to fit our train arrival, and gave us good advice about what to do nearby. We could hear some noise from the pub next door, but even with the window open it didn't keep us from sleeping.

The owners were very helpful and happy to share local tips on places to visit. Rooms were clean and well equipped, with fabulous views across Oban Bay. It's close to the town centre, and a great place to stay.

The views and location are great, and the rooms are immaculate, comfortable, and have everything you need. We stayed here four years ago and came back this week for a couple of days. The host was just as friendly and welcoming, with helpful tips on places to visit and eat. We'd happily return when we get the chance.
