The Royal Hotel

We spent two nights here. The staff were friendly, the food was great, and the hotel looks lovely from outside. The room, though, was really stuffy, and its slanted floor made everything seem to lean toward the door, a bit like being on a boat. The lift was small and slow, and there was a loose board on one of the stairs.

I needed somewhere at short notice for one night, and this was a cheap room in a great location. The receptionist last Tuesday was great too.

Not pleasant. There was no ventilation because the window wouldn't open. They brought me a fan when I asked, and someone came the next day to get the window open. The bathroom was tiny and awkward to move around in, the lift seemed to do its own thing, and the carpet looked like it hadn't been cleaned or replaced in a long time.

The staff were lovely, friendly and helpful, and the room itself was clean and comfortable with what looked like a newly refurbished bathroom. We were on the fifth floor in the turret, where the windows are very high. I'm 5'3", so to see the sea view I'd booked, I had to stand on the chair under the window. We ate in the bar on our second night. I had the Sunday roast, but it came without roast potatoes, and they'd run out of mint sauce for the lamb, which left me disappointed. Even so, I love the Royal and will stay here again on my next visit to Oban.
