The Lodge

My best friend died here. He'd lived there for over six months, and staff knew he had problems and needed someone to check on him. They neglected their duty of care. His ashes arrived today. He should be sitting on the sofa, not be ashes!!!!!!

We turned up without a booking for one night on Saturday 14th September, and the owners offered us a family room. They let us see it before we paid and explained it was mainly used for stag and hen parties, so it could get a little noisy late at night. The room was large, clean and had plenty of space, with a very fair price. The owners were polite and helpful, including with suggestions for places to eat and things to see nearby. It was a good-sized, clean room for the money.

We booked two nights but left after the first morning, once we'd complained to the manager and packed up. We're trying to get a refund, but the owner is ignoring us. The place was disgusting, the worst hotel I've stayed in. The covers and sheets were dirty, and the mattress protector was covered in stains. The mattress should have been thrown out. There were water marks on the ceiling and blood on the wall. The bathroom's cold tap had been shut off, there was no toilet paper, and the towel rail was hanging loose. Floor tiles were lifting, and a sewer smell came in through the window.

The man in charge was pleasant and helpful, but the room still only earns one star from me. It was clean and basic, yet smelled strongly of stale smoke despite the no smoking sign. The odour had got into the bedding too. There was also a horrible smell from the sink that only stopped when I put the plug in.
