There’s plenty of free parking on the road, and the apartment itself was spacious and beautifully decorated. We had a double bedroom with an en-suite, another room with twin beds and its own bathroom, plus a large living room with a comfortable U-shaped sofa. The kitchen was open and modern, and there was a small, clean terrace. We booked through Booking.com at a good price and had excellent communication beforehand. The self-service entry took a few steps, but the instructions were clear enough to follow. The drains had a slightly odd smell, though everything was clean and working. I’d stay again. I’d recommend booking through Booking.com, as these apartments seem to be held to higher standards.

I wouldn’t bring a family here. The smell of marijuana was everywhere, and gas canisters were scattered around. There were filthy floors and walls, a lift that didn’t work, and a serious rat problem at the back. Some of the rats were genuinely as big as cats. The place also seemed full of shady activity, with older men and people getting up to all sorts. Avoid it.

My sister and I were terrified and had to leave at 6am. We kept hearing people banging about, then someone crying and yelling, “please don’t be mad at me.” It was a nightmare before christmas. The corridor seemed endless, and as soon as we entered we were hit by a horrific smell of rotting meat mixed with vomit. It made us gag. There was vomit all along the side of the bed, so we curled up together on one bed to stay warm. Even with the window shut, the room felt as cold as if it were open. There were black handprints on the walls, none of the bedroom TVs worked, and the toilet had no soap for washing hands. The beds were falling apart and felt like they might give way whenever we moved. I wouldn’t suggest bringing a family here, especially children. We were scared to death staying in this “hotel,” which felt more like an apartment.

We left after one night because neither the owner nor Booking.com offered any real help. I’d strongly advise people to avoid Conditioning House in Bradford. The area felt dubious, with drug users and an unsafe atmosphere, especially for families. The experience was horrific, like a glimpse of a dystopian future you’d never want to see. Getting inside was a struggle: first we couldn’t find the key, then we couldn’t locate the apartment through maze-like, prison-style corridors in terrible condition. They smelled of rotting meat and marijuana. The entrance was strewn with rubbish and bird droppings, there were suspicious people around, and rats roaming by the bins. The apartment looked modern at first, but seemed cheaply put together, with cracks in the walls and ceiling and no working heating. During a freezing November night in the UK, our whole family had to crowd into one room around a single plug-in heater. The smoke detectors had been removed from the ceiling, with batteries left exposed. It looked like the owner had neglected basic safety and maintenance.

I’ve called several times asking to speak with a property manager, but nobody has responded or contacted me back. This is ridiculous, and I won’t stop until I get a refund for all the inconvenience. My family travelled a long way hoping for a decent night’s sleep, but the experience ruined their stay. People in the neighbouring apartment appeared to be smoking weed, and the smell filled the corridor. They played loud music through the night, and we had to ask them several times to turn it down or off, including at 3 in the morning. The apartment wasn’t in a livable condition. One bed was broken, and another had a completely worn-out mattress. Both shower heads were broken, and the kettle didn’t work. We paid for an apartment expecting the furniture and amenities to work and the area to be pleasant.
