We had plenty of room in the bunkhouse, and after a long day's walk the beds were really comfortable. The sofas and dining table were a nice extra. Having our own shower and toilet was handy, and the kitchen had everything we needed, including fresh milk. The owners were lovely when I accidentally broke a bulb, which made the stay even nicer. There's a pub a short walk away, but next time we'd cook in the bunkhouse. Highly recommend it for anyone walking Hadrian’s Wall.

We stayed as a group of four while walking part of Hadrian's Wall. The bunkhouse was comfortable and good value, with a kitchen, shower and toilet. Check-in was very easy.

We'd planned to camp, but it was so wet that we switched to one of the camping barns. Basic, but excellent: everything was well organised and dry, and the shower and kitchen were great. You can also camp here. Just remember there's no car access, so you have to walk in.

We were so glad to come back to Holmhead for a second stay. The hosts made us feel like VIPs again, and the full English breakfasts, cooked to order, were delicious. They also put out sliced fresh fruit, which we hadn't needed but enjoyed. Our room was spotless, with an ironed-sheet bed and a comfortable mattress. The tea setup and bathroom were just right, and the view was beautiful. On earlier visits we'd made the most of the ideal walking location; this time we went to Carlisle for the poppy installation at the castle and did some shopping. Can't wait to return!

I was the only camper while hiking the Pennine Way, and I'm grateful they let me stay even though I think it was their day off. They even switched on the drying room, which was a godsend with all my soaked gear. The campsite is right on the trail, with lovely views of the castle ruin and a pretty building and setting. Hadrian's Wall is easy to reach, and the village is an easy walk too.
