The George

The food was good, which only made the very poor service stand out more. This definitely isn’t a four or five star establishment. If you fancy an ’80s pub where the cleaning director seems to have been sacked and the hospitality manager has taken the day off, head in. You might need to be a plumber too, the radiator sounds like the Flying Scotsman.

Good value, quality food and brilliant service, all above what I expect from pub grub. Even on a Monday in January, the atmosphere was nice. The staff were really attentive, cleaning tables as soon as people left, and the toilets were clean too. I’d definitely return.

The steak pie was delicious, and it’s a lovely pub in a beautiful spot. The staff were friendly and helpful. My only personal gripe was that a younger waitress tried to clear my plate before my husband had finished eating.

I’ve visited The George for years and always enjoyed it. The Palmers Gold is delicious and the Ploughman’s is to die for. It was never cheap, but used to feel like fair value for the location. The current prices have taken the shine off for me. I live in an affluent area and often pay premium prices, but £7.50 for a pint of Moretti is a lot when I can get it locally for around £6. It’s now the most expensive pub I visit. The menu has a burger and chips for £20, already at the high end, and an extra patty costs another £8. That’s wild pricing, I’ve never seen anything like it. I know things are expensive and costs are high, but I’m not comfortable with these prices. Sorry.
