Kennacott House has plenty of room for a large family, good parking, and a big back garden. The bedrooms are a good size, the bedding was clean, and the location and views are lovely. But the house needs a lot of attention. The conservatory roof and a dining area window leak and leave puddles. Cleanliness needs work too: there were dead flies in the bathroom, dust and cobwebs around the property, and the outside areas were untidy. With three dogs around, we had to pick up quite a few rusty screws. Only one of the four showers worked, which wasn’t acceptable with 10 people staying. The swimming pool still isn’t finished, and the tennis courts need updating, with only one court playable. You have to pay for the lights to use the badminton court and snooker table. We were very disappointed that the golf course was unusable because the grass was overgrown, and it looked like it hadn’t been played on for a while. The outside bins were already overflowing when we arrived and weren’t emptied during our stay. With so many facilities unavailable, I don’t think the prices are justified.

The cottages are well kept, and having the bedrooms downstairs is useful during hot months. If anything comes up, the on-site managers respond quickly to help.

The location and views are lovely, but the cottage was a huge disappointment. We were staying in Crooklets, which seems to be the cottage with the most photos on the website. I’d read reviews calling the place dated, but that really understates it. The sofas were old and uncomfortable, the carpets need replacing, and the place needs painting. It also needs a proper clean: there was mildew between the shower room tiles, with spiders and cobwebs everywhere. The plates and cutlery were dirty, so I washed everything before using it. The dishwasher only worked every other day, even when I ran the same cycle. We chose this place because the bedroom was downstairs, as our son is disabled, but we had to keep him from tripping on the carpet gripper. After two nights on an uncomfortable bed, I had a bad backache, and my teenage daughter said she had the same problem. The playroom was nice to escape to, and there were plenty of VHS tapes to choose from. A couple of weeks before the trip, our provider told me the pool wouldn’t be refurbished in time, although I’d checked earlier and been told it should be ready. From what I saw, it looks a long way from being refurbished at all. We arrived to find nobody there to greet us, so I called the number on the reception door. The lady kindly explained how to check in and said she was on the other side of the site. I later found out it wasn’t far, but I never saw the owner during our stay. As a full time carer, I’d hoped an expensive break like this would be a relaxing treat. It was the opposite. Luckily the weather was mostly nice, so we tried not to spend too much time inside.

The room was dirty, with rubbish left behind by the previous guests. Outside, rubbish was scattered around overflowing skips and bins. The children's play areas were roped off, and there were piles of building materials and rubble lying around, making it unsafe for children. Builders were working on site at antisocial hours, including after 9pm. We spent three nights there, and the place seemed in a sad state of disrepair, a far cry from the advertised "Luxury Cottages." We booked through Air B&B. The company responded, but we had no direct contact with the owner, and it seems to be a management company that isn’t involved in the day to day running. I’d advise against staying here. There are much better options nearby for a similar price.

Lovely views and a lovely location, but the cottages need updating and more attention to detail. In the Granary especially, the walls, skirtings and radiators need painting. Our soft furnishings were torn on the arms and need replacing. We were given a cloth for cleaning but no spray, so a few more cleaning products would help. We couldn’t use the swimming pool, sauna or golf course. Apparently the golf course is only open six months of the year, even though it could be played year round. A little time and effort goes a long way, especially if you’re going to be expanding.
