The shower took some fiddling to get the temperature right, and a few spots were dusty, so Amber House isn’t flawless. Still, there’s plenty that makes it special, and Gill’s warm welcome is a big part of that. The dining room displays awards for hygiene, training and especially breakfast. In the morning there’s a choice of fruit, porridge, a full English or something lighter. Gill’s eggs come from her own chickens, the meat is locally sourced, and she makes a range of jams, marmalades and chutneys herself. We stayed in this comfortable room while visiting family in Burton. It had tea and coffee facilities, a large shower cubicle and lovely furnishings. Look out for my photo of the 1948 London Olympics teapot. There’s a note on the table about ordering a freshly baked loaf with 24 hours’ notice, and packed lunches or dinner can also be arranged ahead of time. If you’d rather eat out, Alrewas is a 10-minute walk away, with its flowered half-timbered houses, three pubs, a Co-op and a fish and chip shop. We ate at the Crown, which I’ve reviewed separately. Gill mentioned that one of the houses dates back to Henry VIII. I’ll leave some of the other lovely things about Amber House for you to discover.

After getting soaked at a biker event at the nearby National Memorial Arboretum, it was a real relief to find the radiator on and a clothes rail ready so we could dry our gear overnight. Gill was so welcoming and helpful throughout. The room was lovely, with soft white towels and thoughtful bits like a pen torch by the bed and complimentary hand sanitiser. Breakfast was delicious, with plenty to choose from. Gill cooked to order, and there was fruit, yogurt, cereal, rustic toast and lots of homemade preserves, plus endless tea or coffee.

Gill was great, and breakfast was very good. The shared and dining areas were pleasant, and the bed was really comfortable. The room itself felt tired and could use an upgrade. Some skirting boards were missing, and others had dry rot. The shower tiles were mouldy, and the room chair was dirty and worn. It wouldn’t take much to put these things right. The microwave was rusty, had no glass tray, and there was a dirty plate in its place.

Gill looked after me and the other guests so well during my four-night stay last week. The house was comfortable and felt homely, and the breakfasts were the best I’ve had anywhere. I’ll stay here whenever I’m back in the area. Thanks, Gill, five stars!

Gill’s homemade bread, jams, marmalades and preserves make this a real treat for anyone who loves food. Most things are sourced locally, with zero food miles. I stayed one night, found the place easily and got a very warm welcome. There are plenty of places to eat nearby, and it’s well placed for local attractions. Breakfast was brilliant.
