The room was bigger than I expected, with a little hallway and a private bathroom as part of the same room. It was clean and nicely presented. Some furniture was dated, but the room had character, the bed was comfortable, and I slept well. There was a large TV, plus a fridge, microwave, plate, kettle, tea, coffee and milk. My only real room issue was how dark it stayed, even with the lights on. The bathroom was a good size, though the cracked tiles and poor repairs were an eyesore. Check-in was quick and easy, and the staff at the desk were kind and happy to answer questions. They asked if it was my first time there. You can access the building 24 hours a day. It’s an old building, so expect creaky floors and possibly uneven stairs, which are part of its character. Burton doesn’t have much going on, so I wasn’t expecting the Ritz. I’d use it again, especially as most other hotels nearby cost about twice as much.

It was a nice hotel for the price, and the first night was fine. On the second night, music, singing and people going up and down the corridors kept waking me. I finally got up at 5:30 and left. There was nobody at reception to complain to. I won’t be back.

The only good part was the kind housekeeping staff, who came by in the morning and offered fresh towels. The restaurant was closed, which added to the disappointment. Given the state of the building, I wouldn’t have wanted to eat there anyway. The room was unbearably hot, and without air conditioning or a fan I physically couldn’t fall asleep. I left all the windows open but it made no difference. The bathroom looked like something from a Saw movie: everything had a yellow tinge, some lights didn’t work, and the hair dryer looked like it was from the 70s. Wi-Fi didn’t work, the shower was barely a trickle, and the wonky stairs felt unsafe, especially while I was pregnant. There were also people I took to be drug users camped outside in the car park. Worse than a hostel.

A lovely hotel, well priced, central, and with parking.

For the price, this place is a gem. I’ve stayed in hotels all over the UK over the last 25 years, and I don’t understand all the bad reviews. Check-in was quick, courteous and friendly. The room felt like a B&B, with a fridge and microwave. There’s no restaurant on site, so those were more than a fair trade. The bathroom was clean and tidy. Sure, there were a few cracks, but it was just like my bathroom at home, unless you expect every bathroom you stay in to have been refurbished.
