Cae Berllan Cottages

The owners welcomed us with a bottle of Chardonnay in the fridge, and there were tea, coffee, milk sachets, biscuits and sauces to get us started. We also appreciated the fluffy towels and toiletries. For children, there are toys, slides and other play things out in the field; the front garden has tables, chairs and a BBQ for eating outside. The cosy cottage is well equipped for self-catering, with a full cooker, microwave, toaster, slow cooker, air fryer, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and plenty of cookware, dishes and glasses. The owners even provided washing-up liquid and dishwasher tablets. The approach road is pretty rough, so drive slowly, and some of the grounds around the cottages could use a little TLC. Those were really the only downsides.

We’ve booked again for next year. For the price, we have no complaints. It’s a great location near lots of family activities, and the hosts recommended Gypsy Wood, where we had a lovely day with the kids. We cooked every night and ate outside, including a BBQ in the sunshine. This was our third May bank holiday visit, using all three cottages for our big family, and it’s been our best long weekend. The children love the outdoor space and play areas, and we really value that it’s all enclosed and feels safe. The dogs enjoy having free rein too, and there are animals on the land for the kids to see.

We hire all three cottages and have now stayed here three times with our big family, kids and dogs. The location is lovely, close to the beach and lots of attractions. The grounds suit young children perfectly. The cottages are well loved, but cosy, spacious, well equipped and good value.

The peaceful setting is lovely and off the beaten track, with Caernarfon and Snowdon just a short drive away. Sheep and lambs may even come to graze in the field opposite in the morning. The host was friendly and showed us around. There’s plenty of room, and the place has the essentials, plus tea, coffee, biscuits, little toiletries and, especially welcome, a bottle of wine. The swings, slides and ride-on toys were a hit with our daughter. Sadly, it wasn't clean and needs a major refurbishment. There was a musty smell, and with ashtrays provided I wondered if smoking was allowed inside. I guess that might explain the smell. It could be really good, and the host seemed lovely, with some nice touches and a great location, but unfortunately it wasn't for us.
