We booked one night for my birthday. The location and views were breathtaking, with great walks nearby. Our room was large and really clean, and the bathroom had a huge shower and a hairdryer. It was boiling when we arrived, so the fan in the room was welcome. It cooled off by night, thankfully, and the staff member who checked us in was friendly. The beds were the biggest problem. They were rock hard, like sleeping on concrete, and I woke several times in pain. We were also right below the restaurant, so from 8pm until about 10:15pm we heard chairs scraping and footsteps overhead. It started up again around 7:50am when breakfast began. It was quiet for the rest of the night, but the bed still made for a rubbish sleep. The restaurant food was average. The macaroni was gloopy and bland, though the nacho tattie scones were very nice and worth recommending. When we ordered, we were told the card machines were down and they could only take cash. We never carry cash, so the alternative was to use the arcade and get change from its machine, which only gives out £1 coins. It didn’t bother us much, just one of those things. Service after the food arrived was odd. We had to go up for sauce, then again to order another drink, then again to pay. Staff were standing around, and it wasn’t even busy. The TV was frustrating too. We tried to watch the football on ITV, but the Freeview set had hardly any working channels, not even the basic ones. It wasn’t a bad stay, but it wasn’t the best. At £100 a night I’d expect a decent bed. I wouldn’t return to the hotel, though I might try one of the lodges, which looked very nice.

The setting is lovely, but the stay was disappointing. We chose the place after reading lots of positive reviews and started with dinner, only to find there was no vegan food available even though it was listed on the menu. Booking.com showed the pool and sauna as included, but we were charged to use them. Our room had a bath and shower, which would have been nice if there had been hot water. With reception closed at 8pm, I couldn’t get the problem sorted. Customer service was very rude and didn’t seem willing to help. The pancakes I ordered for breakfast were cold and gummy. I wouldn’t recommend this place.

A lovely place to stay, with rooms that welcome dogs and guests with disabilities. Food is reasonably priced and available on site until late, and there’s a small shop if you need something. The swimming and spa facilities looked good, though we didn’t use them. The mostly young staff were pleasant and professional, especially Charlie at reception. Our only disappointment was that the entertainment ended quite early. We were there for a family birthday break, but otherwise had a lovely stay.

The View restaurant has a beautiful outlook, and the food was very good and fairly priced. The place is going through a transition at the moment, with the administration situation, but the staff are doing well despite the uncertainty.

We had a great family weekend, and it was very dog friendly. The staff were great and really friendly too. But the swimming and arcade hours have been cut, which makes everything feel rushed, and I can’t see why they reduced them. There’s no play park for the kids either, so there’s nothing for them to do after 8pm. If they sorted that out, it would be 5 star again.
