Thackray House

We had a really enjoyable short break at Thackary House Hotel, a place we used to visit when it was The Roman Camp Hotel. The old building has been updated with a light touch that keeps its former atmosphere. Work on the grounds is starting to bring them back to their full potential, though that will take time. We especially enjoyed taking a book to a comfortable chair by the fire on a miserable rainy day. The public rooms have been tastefully redecorated, with seating replaced, reupholstered or cleaned, and new drapes in some rooms. Staff were attentive and sometimes checked whether we wanted coffee or anything else. Our room was spacious, comfortable and refreshed, though some things could be improved. We had to ask for a chair for the desk, but a friendly staff member brought one promptly. There was a hospitality tray and bottled water. Glasses aren’t usually provided in the room, even though there are some in the bathroom, but you can ask for them. The food was excellent. Breakfast had a superb range of choices, all cooked perfectly, and we loved the plate of delicious freshly cut fruit left on the table each morning. The food in the Strawberry Fields bistro was also excellent, but the menu was limited, especially for one of us with a fish allergy. Portions were rather large, though some dishes could be shared. A relaxed dining menu is available from noon to 5pm in the drawing room, library or garden room. The low tables made eating a little challenging. It would be a better experience at higher tables in the Wilson Breakfast Room, which would also be closer to the kitchens and mean staff had less distance to carry the food. We had a great stay. It’s early days, and the mostly new, friendly, enthusiastic staff are still finding their feet. With time, we hope Thackary House will run as smoothly as the old Roman Camp did. We look forward to coming back.

Absolutely gorgeous property, with lovely surprises throughout. The staff were great too.

Worst hotel of our 28-day stay. Our room was 28 degrees, there was no way to get fresh air, and the room felt stifling. They were burning smelly fireplaces even though it was hot outside. It felt depressing, like an underground cave, with no air anywhere.

Such a lovely hotel, with fabulous staff and great service.
