The Lowenac Hotel

My daughter and I celebrated our birthdays together at the Lowenac Hotel. The buffet was amazing and very well priced, and the service and facilities were very good. The house DJ was exceptional and got everyone dancing. Some guests stayed overnight and told us they had lovely rooms. The staff were happy and approachable, with a real “nothing is a problem” attitude. I wouldn’t hesitate to book again. Thank you, Martin Faulkner, it was a pleasure meeting you.

We travelled 300 miles for a funeral and were greeted so warmly. The hotel is beautiful, with lots of original features dating back over 140 years. Our room was amazing and the bed incredibly comfortable, making for a lovely one-night stay. We hope to come back for a holiday next time, hopefully before too long.

There was parking, and the breakfast was enjoyable, but the rest of the stay was poor. I paid £45 for a room that felt dim and dingy, with dust and mould. The sheets were crumpled but seemed clean. My old white towel had yellow splatter stains. One bathroom light kept timing out and switching on and off randomly, which was unpleasant while using the toilet. The building as a whole was badly lit. The staff welcomed me, then disappeared. I went downstairs between 3 and 5 pm and couldn’t find anyone; the whole place seemed deserted. At breakfast, the milk served as hot chocolate was warm, and as a solo diner I was given a peculiar one-litre jug of orange juice. The food came on a chipped plate. When I complained about the towel, dust and lighting, I was told that “no-one has complained about the lighting before.” The place gave me no sense that anyone took pride in it.

They were welcoming and very helpful, and everything was clean. Breakfast was excellent too. There isn’t a restaurant, so we had to go out for dinner, but they pointed us to an excellent Indian restaurant a short walk away. One small thing, the lack of colour in the decor felt a little depressing.
