Kirkwood House

The room was quiet and clean, with a cosy feel and a very comfortable bed. But I had to wait half an hour for hot water in the morning, which threw my plans off and made me late. When the place is full and everyone showers at once, that’s a rough way to start the day. I’d rate it much higher if they installed combination boilers so hot water was available whenever people needed it. A cold shower or kettle water just doesn’t cut it.

The location was okay, but the room was tiny, dusty, and had a horrible strange smell. I stayed five nights, and each evening that stale, dusty odour hit me as soon as I entered the house. I’m a bit allergic, so I’d tell anyone with similar allergies to stay away. My bed was on the floor with no legs, and the room layout was bizarre. I wouldn’t recommend it.

We were full at Twentysix Guesthouse, so I found a room here for a friend at very short notice. It was small, but clean and inexpensive. No breakfast was fine, since Renee makes a superb cooked breakfast here anyway.

The room was so small that words don’t really describe it, and the walls were paper thin. I could hear every detail from next door, including loud noise that woke me when I was trying to sleep. There are no photos of this room in their galleries, which I can only assume is because of its size. They told me it would be small, but not this small. At 1 am, water came through the ceiling and a live electric bulb. They didn’t deal with the leak, just handed me towels, and I ended up without a single dry item of clothing for the rest of my stay. I consider that a serious health and safety concern. The manager didn’t want to handle the situation himself. He said they wouldn’t refund me for the poor room and service because it wasn’t their fault and I had decided to leave. He also said they had no terms and conditions for the situation, which I understand is against the law. Offering me another room after all that didn’t make up for refusing a refund. I’m furious at how unprofessional and disgusting this so-called three-star B&B was, especially since they don’t serve food on site. Please take better care of future guests. It seems like plenty of people have left upset, not just me.
