They wouldn’t take a credit card for the £100 GBP deposit, so I had to hand over cash and wasn’t given a receipt. When I asked whether it was safe to give cash to a stranger without proof, the clerk spoke offensively and suggested I didn’t trust the establishment. Now I’m wondering whether that same stranger will be there to return the cash when I move out. The whole arrangement feels abnormal. Since you manage reviews to help other travellers, I hope you can explain what’s going on.

This felt like a scam. Before sending the check-in details, the property provides an online link, but the site doesn’t work. I had to call them to complete the process and get the instructions. I spent half an hour trying the website and never managed to finish the pre-check-in. A representative then said the booking wasn’t refundable even if I couldn’t check in, which makes no sense. There was no one at the property to handle credit cards either. I booked through Expedia and expected someone on site to help with check-in, so I wondered whether this was an Airbnb. When I tried to cancel through Expedia, I hadn’t realized they’d charged the full reservation and refunded nothing. This is totally a scam.

I’m not looking forward to staying after reading the negative comments. Agoda hadn’t mentioned any extra deposit, but on the day I booked, they called asking for £150 on top of the price. When I said that didn’t seem right, the woman on the phone spoke smugly and passive aggressively, then told me to try calling Agoda.

I’d give it no stars if I could. After I questioned the £150 deposit that wasn’t listed on the booking site, they spoke to me in a way that felt really unpleasant. Asking for my passport and other personal details also seems fraudulent.
