The central location is a real advantage if you want Cambridge's academic heart right outside your door. Sidney Street puts you moments from Market Square, major shops, and Senate House Lawn, while inside the college there are old courts, a lovely chapel, and a secluded Fellows' Garden. The formal halls and close community give the place a strong identity, and living among so much preserved history is a privilege. Its smaller scale can feel intimate, though at times a bit insular beside larger colleges with more resources. The famous Cromwellian history is an interesting part of the place. That convenience comes with very little quiet or privacy. This is one of Cambridge's busiest visitor areas, with constant foot traffic, Sidney Street noise, and people looking into the courts. It can feel like a bubble within a bubble, cut off from the "real" city. Rooms are often small and draughty, and may lack the modern comforts of private housing. Living here means choosing atmosphere and history over comfort. It's suited to people who want full immersion in Cambridge and can live with the bustle and little anonymity. If you need room to spread out, peace, or a clear divide between study and city life, it may feel claustrophobic. This is the uncompromising Oxbridge experience at its most central, a privilege and a test of endurance.

I got a good deal that included B&B, and the college is handy for all sorts of activities in central Cambridge. My first room was a good size, ensuite, and had a fridge. The building seemed renovated, and, unusually for college accommodation, it had a lift. When I returned in February 2026, they put me in a Guest Room in another building without a lift. It was a lovely, spacious room with a 1950s feel, which made up for that. When booking, it's worth checking where your room will be.

The staff were friendly and helpful, and breakfast was included. I booked three nights in August for about $100 USD a night, staying in a private student-housing room with a single bed, desk, sink, small fridge, and shared bathroom. The historic campus is beautiful and right in the town centre, about a mile from the train station. Be aware there are several flights of stairs to reach some rooms, so it isn't suitable if mobility is an issue. I'd recommend the stay.

We spent four days on the Sidney Sussex campus. The buildings are lovely, the setting is right in the centre of Cambridge, and breakfast was lovely too.

I liked the peaceful, well-kept gardens, which feel more intimate than the grand courts at bigger colleges. Sidney Sussex has a cozy, welcoming atmosphere despite its smaller size, with that familiar Cambridge intellectual feel. The chapel's wood-panelled interior and the stained glass in the dining hall are both striking. Founded in 1596, it has beautifully preserved Renaissance architecture and a fascinating history. Tucked just off Sidney Street, the college has a quieter, almost hidden feel that adds to its charm. A lovely place to pause in the centre of Cambridge, especially if you enjoy history.
