The area is a little run down, with some empty pubs and houses, but the location is great for getting to the city centre. The bedroom was clean, the beds were firm and gave us a good night’s sleep, and there was hot water. The breakfast was amazing, with good choice and nice food, including perfectly cooked eggs and bacon. The staff were lovely and helpful. They were flexible when our dog arrived unexpectedly and charged only a tenner.

The owner, Ishmail, greeted us with a smile and took us to our rooms, which had everything we could want: a kettle, hairdryer, toiletries, WiFi and parking. There were four of us, two pensioners and our two adult children. He even ordered our Nepali curry and set a table for us in the dining room. He remembered our names and checked that we had everything we needed, such a personal touch. Breakfast was amazing, with lots of vegetarian choices. We just wish we’d had more time, as our daughter’s graduation took up our time. It’s a short walk to the town centre, and after a long day we could relax watching TV. We had a lovely stay and would definitely recommend the hotel.

Do not trust these people or risk booking here. I booked a room a year ahead for one night during a big annual event in Carlisle, knowing the central hotels fill up quickly. They tried to cancel once, but Booking.com support called them on it. A couple of months later, with all the central Carlisle hotels fully booked, they cancelled again and wouldn’t change their minds. They said they could no longer honour the booking. Meanwhile, Booking.com showed one room available, at more than five times the original price. Every other hotel was booked by then. They’ve badly let me down in a way that felt obvious and shallow. Do not trust them. Do not risk it.

Breakfast has to be one of the best accommodation breakfasts I’ve had. The host is such a nice man, very welcoming and helpful. The rooms are clean, with a comfy bed and a good shower. Would definitely recommend.

The owners were working on upgrading a guest lounge, which seems like a great idea for people to mingle after hiking or work. There’s also a patio at the front. My stay was amazing, and the room rates were good. The owners gave me a warm welcome, and my en suite room was comfortable and well supplied, with cookies, tea, an electric kettle, cups and saucers. Breakfast is included, with a choice from cold cereal to a full British breakfast, served in a pleasant, airy dining room. The location is ideal on the main road into Carlisle from the south: easy for the Lake District, within walking distance of the historic city centre, an easy drive to Hadrien's Wall and the trail, and well placed for Scotland. I highly recommend it, especially for solo female travellers.
