Crown and Mitre Hotel

We had a fantastic couple of nights at the Crown and Mitre Hotel. The service was excellent throughout, especially from the breakfast catering staff, and my family and I were bowled over by the hospitality. The location overlooking Carlisle city centre couldn't be better, right next to the cathedral, which is well worth checking out. Breakfast is a great choice, with eggs cooked to perfection. Our family room was a bit dated, but did the job, and we all slept well. We'll come back if we're in the area again.

The hotel’s entrance is really pretty, and dinner in the restaurant was delicious. That blue cheese sauce was the best! I picked this budget-friendly, dog-friendly place for a one-night stop while walking the Hadrian's Wall National Trail. The pool and jacuzzi were included, though I was too tired from walking to try them. My room could use a remodel: the old wallpaper was peeling in spots. It was at the front, and with the windows open during the heatwave because there was no air con, I kept waking up to drunk men shouting in the street.

The Christmas atmosphere around gorgeous Carlisle was lovely, and the electric car charging was a much appreciated bonus. The hotel was spotless and well cared for, and we thought it was good value, though it’s starting to feel tired. Our room had a dated kettle on a glass shelf, instant Nescafe, no fridge, a small wardrobe and basic toiletries. The pool and jacuzzi area needs attention, especially the shower and changing rooms. It was so grimy and smelly that I held my breath walking through. I’d recommend staying here, but not for the pool or spa.

The bed was very comfortable, and we enjoyed the small, warm pool and lovely hot tub. Our tidy little room had a traditional bath with a shower over it, a classic door key, plus tea, coffee and biscuits for two cups each. It was cold when we first arrived, but the warm welcome helped make up for that. This traditional-style hotel is in a pedestrianised shopping area. If you’re arriving by car, I’d call reception ahead for the car park postcode. Great place.
