Wheatsheaf

We were staying nearby and ended up eating at the Wheatsheaf two nights running. The lamb pinwheels are especially good, and the pub food was excellent both times. Everyone working there was friendly. On our first visit we stayed for the quiz, which was good fun. The second night, we sat in an area that was soon taken over by a local football club committee meeting. They’d reserved one table, but it turned out to be too small for the group. Since the rest of the bar was mostly empty, staff could perhaps have let us know so we could pick another spot. Moving with our food would have felt awkward, though it was fine in the end, and we overheard some entertaining stories.

We stayed for one night in December, and the location was spot on for our early start with Bibbys coaches the next day. We got a warm welcome on a cold, wet evening and enjoyed the restaurant food. The beds were incredibly comfortable, but the room needs attention. There was damp high on the wall and the wallpaper was starting to peel. The low energy bulb made a poor first impression, the lamp between the beds looked like it hadn’t been dusted in months, and the bathroom sink light didn’t work. The toilet was squeezed into a cramped corner, and the shower cubicle could use some care. The location was perfect for us, but the room let us down.

We only popped in briefly, but it was a very pleasant stop. The barman was putting out a dogs welcome sign as we passed, so we came in for a drink. Nice pint, and the man behind the bar came over to say hello to our dog and give her a treat.

The breakfast was fab, with a great choice of hot and cold food and some of the best quality we’ve had. Our room was large, clean and well stocked with teas, coffees and hot chocolate. All the staff were amazing, and we’d stay again.
