The meal was outstanding: beautifully presented, delicious, generous, and superb value. We both had three courses and could barely move afterwards. I'd come back for the food, but the service gives me pause. We arrived for a Valentine's meal while it was busy, though there were still tables yet to arrive and plenty of staff around. We got drinks menus quickly, but waited 10 minutes to order drinks and another 30 for our food order. Tables that arrived after us ordered first, with no obvious reason for the delay. Of the four drinks we ordered, two came promptly, the third took 15 minutes, and the last took 30. After dessert, I wanted to pay and leave because my husband had an early work start. We waited over half an hour, but the staff seemed to have vanished, so I went to the bar and paid directly. The restaurant was almost empty by then, and I could see only two staff.

I don't give five stars, but we had a very nice meal with my sister tonight in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. The rump steak was cooked just as I asked and tasted great, though there was one bit I couldn't eat, which is rump for you. The two-steak and bottle-of-wine deal was excellent value. The meal wasn't huge, so an included side like onion rings might have helped, but I'm being picky. A very good evening overall.

We had a weekend break at this lovely, very clean hotel, with kind, friendly, professional staff throughout. The food was amazing, and the cosy bar and dining area had several local ciders to choose from. The location was beautiful too. Breakfast on the bank holiday was the one difficult part. We were a group of 12, and the kitchen and restaurant seemed short-staffed. Some orders took more than an hour, service got a bit muddled, and I think they ran out of eggs, sausages, and a few other things. Also, the electric car chargers are just for decoration. They don't work.

We've stayed here several times as a family, and also held our late Mum's Celebration of Life here. The staff made us feel so welcome and were understanding and helpful during a sad time. Nothing was too much trouble. It feels like a quiet, relaxed home from home. The rooms are clean and comfortable, and the food is tasty, with lots of choice and very good value. We'd definitely stay again.

There are grassy fields nearby for dog walks, and Chard center is just five minutes away, so the location worked really well. All the staff were lovely, and the food looked perfect. Breakfast was cooked just right. Fabulous stay, and I look forward to going again!
