The Bell Inn

We used the Bell's "Deluxe Double Room" for one night on the way from the Midlands to Cornwall. Google Maps got us thoroughly lost in Cheltenham's one way system before we eventually found the pub. There were no spaces in the nearby on-street bays, so I parked on double yellows and moved the car later when a space opened up. To be fair, booking.com did say parking couldn't be reserved, but it was a hassle. A friendly young woman showed us up several flights of stairs to the room. Oddly, it had no outside door handle, which made it a puzzle to close and lock when we went out for dinner. The room was clean, with a fairly comfortable bed, but I wouldn't call it deluxe. The floor was very uneven, though that's understandable in an old building, and the decor was basic and a bit tired. The bathroom had a plastic concertina door between it and the bedroom, a toilet, basin, small shower, toiletries and towels. Furnishings were basic, with no wardrobe, just a rail in an alcove. A kettle, mugs, tea and coffee were provided. We went downstairs for a pint and found a good range of beers. The Bell is a traditional, old fashioned drinkers' pub, popular with locals, which I liked. Lots of other traditional pubs and fast food places are an easy five minute walk away. There's also a nearby Spoons that may be the noisiest in the UK. I'd avoid it unless you're under twenty or enjoy what kids today laughingly call music. Our night at the Bell was peaceful. The £90 room price reflects the fact that Cheltenham is affluent and touristy. I'd go back for a few pints, but not to stay.
