Maison Claire

A horrible experience. They asked us for a deposit at the last minute, then tried to charge £50 for replacing two dirty towels. Luckily Booking.com returned the deposit, which I felt she shouldn't have taken in the first place. The lights had what looked like about ten years' worth of dust on them, and the broken shower head sat at the bottom of its rail with hardly any pressure. They tried to rip us off.

We only agreed to pay the £200 deposit during the week of our hen do because we didn't want to risk losing our accommodation so close to the booking. It wasn't listed on Booking.com, and it felt like a tactic. After our stay, the owner refused to return it, blaming a back door lock that had mysteriously broken, even though we hadn't used it and it never locked. The owner had specifically promised us use of the kitchen and shared area when we booked. Then, at the last minute, she said both were closed for “work,” despite our group staying there for a hen do on 20 September 2025. This was the only reason we chose the place. The owner was rude, and the whole thing felt like a scam. I'd avoid it.

The place is a cute little house with interesting decor, and it's close to the city centre. But the rooms were tiny, the beds squeaked and were very uncomfortable, and the bathroom doors wouldn't close. The host asked for a deposit we hadn't agreed to. She also bragged about threatening to call the police on a previous guest for being too noisy, and seemed as though she didn't want us there. I wouldn't recommend it. A Travelodge or similar would probably offer a better stay for a comparable price.

The landlady was very accommodating and shared some good suggestions for places to eat and drink. Markets and shops are close by, too. It's a lovely little hotel, spotlessly clean and tastefully decorated, with lots of thoughtful extra touches.
