The main draw is the location. You can walk everywhere, with the revamped Chester Market about 5 minutes away, the Cathedral 5 minutes, and the main city about 7 minutes. The bar is nice, and it's a period property, but it isn't cheap for what you get. There's no car park, and the nearest one is about a 10 minute walk and costs around £10 a day. We were a couple staying for 2 nights. The staff were friendly and helpful, though there was nobody at reception when we arrived, so a bar worker came over to check us in. He was pleasant, but gave us a room key before the cleaner had finished, so we went for a beer and came back later. Reception is part of the bar area. The room was small and functional, but cold. A plug-in heater eventually warmed it up. There were only 4 mismatched hangers in the wardrobe, not much help with getting ready. The bathroom was surprisingly big for the small room, and the shower was excellent. The TV was tiny, though hopefully you won't spend long in the room.

The food had a lovely home cooked taste, which was nice to find in a pub. We came for lunch to celebrate our anniversary, and the cosy, welcoming place and quick, friendly service made it a lovely visit. We'll definitely come back. Thank you!

The chips were nice, but I expected better for the price. I ordered fish and chips, and there wasn't much fish in the batter, about the amount you'd get in a fish finger.

It's a lovely old worldly pub and hotel, right in the centre, with nice staff and a comfortable place to sit and relax. We stayed two nights. The room was lovely and very clean, and we enjoyed the stay, though we left tired. We didn't eat there, but the food looked really good. Noise was the issue. We could hear the person next door snoring through the thin adjoining wall, which was off putting and kept us awake. The room faced the road. The first night was not too bad, but the second was rough, with what sounded like a full on party outside, bin lorries, street cleaners and bottles being emptied through the night. I know it's an old building and that street noise isn't the hotel's fault, but the window needs something to reduce the constant noise. Would we stay again? Yes, just not in a front room, and preferably somewhere with thicker inner walls.

The braised feathered beef with mash, kale and beef dripping gravy was a real treat. The beef melted in your mouth, the mash was sublime, and the gravy brought it all together. My wife had the steak and ale pie, which was packed with tender beef in a hearty pastry crust. The chips were nice too. We also enjoyed all the real ales, and had a really good pint or three. So glad we stopped for food. Highly recommended.
