The Star & Garter

That locally brewed beer was delicious, and the staff were lovely. It's a really high-quality pub with a fantastic menu of some unique dishes, all cooked really well. We just got back from a fabulous meal and are rearranging our plans so we can go again before heading back up north.

The desserts were all homemade, we asked, and the dark chocolate torte was delicious, especially with the Kirsch-soaked raisins and mango sorbet. That was a great finish to what I consider one of the best meals I've had this year, start to finish. The ham hock brioche starter came with tasty rarebit, a perfectly cooked quail's egg and a parmesan crisp. We looked at each other and thought, this chef can really cook. Then the sirloin was cooked to perfection and seasoned spot on. When asked if it needed sauce, I said no. I like when chefs have the confidence to season properly and keep a simple dish simple, and that was exactly what happened. It really came through how much we enjoyed it. Really well done Jake and the team, I hope more people get to enjoy your brilliant cooking.

On a grey Sunday, we called at the last minute hoping to book a table for two. Julie was so accommodating and reserved one straight away. We arrived to a cosy atmosphere and the smell of delicious food, and everyone made us feel welcome. The service and food were excellent. It was heartwarming to enjoy the experience and share in everyone else's enjoyment too. We'll be back soon. Thank you Star and Garter for making a grey day great. We can't recommend The Star and Garter highly enough.

A couple of weeks ago, I had the sea bass and my old school friend had the venison burger, with a pint of Bowman's Swift One. Everything was excellent and the service was good. It's a small, cosy place with a warm welcome. Happy to recommend.
