Every member of staff we met during our couple of days here was wonderful, whatever their role. Lucy and Sydney deserve a special mention for handling everything so gracefully, even while busy. The staff are beyond five star. Thanks, Kingsway.

The sea view from our table was lovely, and the staff were generally good with us. But the meal was a letdown. The starters were passable, the vegetables and sauce were fine, and dessert was okay, though none of it showed much imagination. The Dover sole was the worst part: dry and tough, like it had been cooked the day before and brought up from Dover overnight. The menu itself was limited and uninspiring. We ended up at the Kingsway Hotel on a Monday evening because we didn’t have many other options. Its seafront setting is excellent, but £140 for two without wine is a lot to pay for food like this. One other thing: our waitress scraped and stacked the plates at the table, school dinner style. Kingsway, please train the staff, improve the menu, and serve better quality meals. Maybe the location is carrying you.

All the staff were so kind and made sure our group had what we needed. There were 22 of us, with people of different ages, celebrating a special birthday with lunch on Saturday 10th January. The food was exceptional, with a good variety of dishes and presentation and contents that everyone agreed were just right. Thank you all for making the afternoon so special.

We could have watched the shipping heading to and from the Humber ports for ages. Our room at the front had a wonderful view over the promenade, beach and estuary. The bed was really comfortable too, and breakfast was excellent. My wife and I stayed for one night in October on a bed and breakfast basis. Friendly staff and excellent service made it another five star experience.

We were left on our own after the main course, with nobody checking whether things were okay, offering another drink or bringing a dessert menu. We left early, shocked by how perfunctory the service was. You get more attention from servers at McDonalds. No tip this time. This was the 2pm dinner service on New Year’s Day. The seafront view was wonderful, but the place wasn’t particularly busy and service was still lacklustre. No single server seemed to be looking after our table. We waited over half an hour between starter and main, and when the food finally arrived, nobody apologised for the delay. The Kingsway feels like a shadow of its former self under its current management. Avoid.
