The Old Mill Knitsley

Pauline looked after us well during a lovely stay at the Old Mill. The rooms have a quaint, beautiful feel, and the setting is lovely. Breakfast was good too. The WiFi came and went, but that didn't bother us in such peaceful rural surroundings. I'd recommend staying here.

There was no hot water or WiFi at any point during my stay. Then at 10:30 PM, while I was asleep, someone banged loudly and tried my door, saying they'd locked themselves out and that I needed to call the hotel owner. I'd booked a week in advance and arrived on a Tuesday to find the place completely empty. The supplied phone number didn't work. I eventually found a mobile number on a wall for the owner's mother, who has retired. To her credit, she was helpful. She said they had no bookings, then checked with her daughter and confirmed that I did have one.

The pork sandwich was all right, though the meat was a bit tough. Its gravy had no flavour, and the chips tasted of dirty fryer fat. The chicken wrap had the same greasy, dirty-fat taste, as did its chips, so I left the whole lot. It had been a lovely day, and I only popped in for a sandwich and a glass of wine. Really disappointing.

The cosy room with its log fire had proper old mill vibes, and the prices were very reasonable. We had the trio of chicken, beef and pork for Sunday lunch. The meat was good, the Yorkshire pudding was nice, the veg was basic but pleasant, and the gravy was spot on. Shame there wasn't lamb or cauliflower cheese, though with lamb prices these days I don't blame them. We'll definitely be back.
