Lazaat Hotel

The room had a bit of damage, though it was clean, and the food and breakfast were both very good. They also upgraded our room at no charge. One hiccup: when I booked online, I was told payment would be taken at check-in, but the money had already come off my card when we arrived. I’d wanted to pay in cash.

Max, the wedding coordinator, was brilliant and kept working right through the night. The rooms were immaculate, the meal was good, and the venue itself was generally great for our son's wedding. Drinks were a real letdown, though: the bar was very expensive and the selection and quality were poor. Twice, our pricey drinks were taken from tables when we’d left them unattended for the ceremony and dancing. The Coke mixer and Boddingtons were poorly kept too. Give Max a pay rise.

The rooms were spot on, but the bar prices were extreme. A pint of Stella and a double pink gin with lemonade came to almost £20. The DJ at the Christmas meal was worse. I’ve never heard such a rubbish, confused mix of music. Sack him and get a new DJ.

We had a brilliant night at last week's dinner dance, and the service was exceptional. But the drinks cost left me disgusted and extremely cross. The Christmas Fizz was £35 a bottle, for a bottle of prosecco with just a thimbleful of cranberry juice in the glass. My two friends and I each bought one. Then yesterday I saw the very same prosecco at Morrisons for £4.50 a bottle. I know venues make money from drinks, but that markup is far beyond what you'd expect. If
