Set beneath the Lomond Hills, Falkland is a lovely historic village with picturesque streets, traditional stone cottages and the magnificent Falkland Palace. It's popular with walkers, history lovers and Outlander fans.

The fountain commissioned by Onesiphorus and Margaret Tyndall-Bruce of Falkland Estate is an impressive feature on the main road through this charming little town. Alexander Roos designed it, and it was put up in 1856. The streets around it are among the region's most attractive, with independent shops, pubs and historic buildings. Visitors can park for free at Back Wynd, which is conveniently placed for the town and palace.

Falkland is a really picturesque little village, with lovely walks nearby in the Faulkland Estate. The fountain appears in season one of Outlander, and the village stands in for Inverness and Claire and Frank's honeymoon destination. We visited on a quiet, moody Monday in the drizzle, which gave the village extra character and charm. It would be beautiful in any weather. There are a few lovely coffee shops around.
